New to Shogi and wondering when pieces flip over? Here is a simple guide to Shogi promote conditions and basic rules.

Understanding Promotion Conditions and the Promotion Zone

The board has 81 squares across 9x9, and checkmating the king wins. To promote, move a piece into or out of the opponent's 3 ranks.

Here, the pawn at 2d moves into the promotion zone at 2c and promotes to a tokin. Promoting powers up a piece; you can choose whether to promote or stay unpromoted. The king and gold general cannot promote, leaving 6 pieces: pawn, lance, knight, silver general, rook, and bishop.

How the 8 Types of Pieces Move and Their Promoted States

Of all 8 piece types, some gain much greater movement upon promotion. While the king and gold general cannot promote, pawns, lances, knights, and silver generals all move just like a gold general once promoted.

PieceMovement After Promotion
Silver, Knight, Lance, PawnMoves exactly like a gold general
Rook (Dragon)Rook's orthogonal movement plus 1 square diagonally
Bishop (Horse)Bishop's diagonal movement plus 1 square orthogonally
King, Gold GeneralCannot promote

In this diagram, the dragon at 2c moves 1 square diagonally in addition to orthogonal steps, and the horse at 5e moves 1 square orthogonally plus diagonal steps. Promoted major pieces provide stronger influence.

When you drop captured pieces in hand onto empty squares, you cannot place them promoted. Drop them unpromoted first, then move them to fulfill the promotion zone conditions.

Fouls and Rules to Keep in Mind Alongside Promotion

Figure 3: Moving the pawn at 2b to 2a, or the knight at 7d to 6b or 8b, leaves no further steps, so they must promote. Leaving them unpromoted is illegal.

Moving an unpromoted piece where it cannot move forward results in an illegal piece with no moves. In this diagram, the pawn at 2b advancing to 2a or the knight at 7d to 6b or 8b must promote, as they cannot move further. Pawns and lances must promote on the farthest rank, and knights must promote on the last 2 ranks.

Having 2 unpromoted pawns on the same file brings Two Pawns (nifu), and checkmating with a dropped pawn causes drop pawn mate, both leading to a loss by illegal move. Repetition causes a draw by sennichite, but perpetual check is an illegal foul.

Frequently asked questions

Must a piece always promote when entering the promotion zone?

Promotion is usually optional. However, if a pawn or lance enters the furthest rank, or a knight reaches the back 2 ranks, it must promote to avoid becoming a piece with no moves.

Can a piece promote when moving out of the promotion zone?

Yes, moving out of the promotion zone also allows promotion. Shogi lets you promote by stepping into the 3 farthest ranks or by moving out from them.

Can dropped pieces be placed into the promotion zone already promoted?

No. When dropping pieces in hand onto the board, you must place them unpromoted. You can promote on later turns by moving into or within the promotion zone.

Can a promoted piece be reverted back to its original state?

No, you cannot undo promotion willingly. A promoted piece stays promoted on the board, but reverts to its unpromoted state when captured into pieces in hand.
